Machelle Thompson, PT, CMC, GCM owner of Keen Homecare is life care manager with over 30 years of experience. Her partners in care are Ginny and Amy and together they can work with almost any situation imaginable. Elderly dementia patients are their most common client type but they also work with younger patience that need part time care for rehabilitation and families in need of respite care.
Machelle was raised in San Bernadino and moved to Long Beach at the age of 18. She graduated from Mt. Saint Mary’s in 1990, has two sons, Ryan, 20 and Jack, 16 is an active member of Provisors and the Long Beach Yacht Club. She is a past president of the EALB and a recipient of the Don Temple President’s Award.
There have been many changes in the home care industry in the past few years. Wages for care givers have increased 300% and many new regulations have been put in place to ensure they do not work more than 8 hours a day. While this is great for care givers it’s rough on people in need of care,, especially of they need 24 hour or hospice care. Day rates for care have gone up from $250/day to $650/day. Even if you have longterm care insurance it’s not enough for most people to stay in their homes as they age if they need medical care. Longterm care insurance covers the rates from three years ago not the inflated rates of today. Board and care facilities are a great alternative to convalescence homes and are becoming increasingly available with each passing year. Convalescence homes have a daytime care giver to patient ratio of 25 to 1 during the day and 50 to 1 at night. Board and care facilities have a day and night ratio of 3 to 1.
Machelle and her team are great at stabilizing complicated situations especially for clients with COPD and all kinds of dementia. If you or a loved one are in need of excellent care or need more information give Machelle a call.
