On Monday, April 30th the Executives Association of Long Beach met for their weekly networking luncheon to hear a classification talk from Vince Bunting for the K-9 Officers Association.

Vince Bunting has owned C.H. Topping brakes for over 35 years. C.H. Topping specializes in commercial, industrial, and personal brake systems. Vince, along with his son, can tackle any brake challenge and are trusted in the automotive industry as well as car museums.

Not only is Vince an avid car enthusiast and a member of many car clubs and automotive services, he is also part of the K-9 Officers Association. He has been active in the K-9 Officers Association for 22 years.

Vince’s talk provided insight into the background of the K-9 Officers Association. In 1979, the non-profit organization began supporting a K-9 unit for the Long Beach Police Department, though it has no official connection with the city of Long Beach. The Association, along with the handlers, purchase the dogs from overseas and provide funds for their food and medical care. Additionally, the Association provides the handler with extensive training in local facilities while they interact with the dogs on a daily basis. The duties the dogs are trained to provide include service (search and rescue), drug sniffing, and bomb detecting. On average it costs the K-9 Association about $15,000 to $20,000 over a period of three to five years to purchase and provide for the dogs while they are in their care.

To assist in covering some of the costs the K-9 Association is hosting a car show on May 12th which will debut about 300 cars as well as provide a K-9 demonstration. Vince and the K-9 Officers Association has worked very hard to provide the Long Beach Police Department with a K-9 unit that is highly regarded as one of the best on the west coast.
