The long standing slogan of the association has been "Business is our Business". The Executives Association of Long Beach (EALB) was founded in 1922. It is an association of Long Beach business executives, each of whom represents his or her respective firm at the management level.

The Long Beach Executives Association is a member of the International Executives Association, a worldwide group of similar associations. It is not a service club, a social group or fraternal order. The EALB is a networking group for business owners and high level executives. It has but one unique objective: to capture the natural bond of common interest which exists between business executives and by regular weekly meetings, develop and enjoy a brand of fellowship conducive to the creation of additional and profitable business for all its members.

It does not require its members to patronize each other, but it does provide opportunities for each member to promote their products or services and it can open doors that otherwise are closed to desired business. Members of the EALB often consider the association as an extension of their own business or profession.

On Monday, April 27th the Executives Association of Long Beach met for their weekly meeting to hear from Cindy Skovgard of Pathways Volunteer Hospice. 

Pathways Volunteer Hospice started 1985 in the basement of Lakewood Regional Medical Center as a community outreach program and has grown since then. In the last 30 years Pathways has expanded to offer many additional programs while they still stay true to their mission of being a “non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to providing compassionate care to families living with illness and loss.”

Cindy Skovgard has been involved in community relations, fundraising and non-profit management for over 38 years.  Her depth of experience has helped Pathways gain its reputation in the community as the organization people turn to for hospice, care giving services and bereavement support. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Development from California State University Long Beach, with an emphasis in behavior modification.  In her professional positions she has served as Executive Director for the Greater Long Beach, Mission Valley and Fullerton YMCA’s, Assistant Director of Development for St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, and a Public Relations Consultant for KBE.  For over 23 years, Cindy has been at the helm of Pathways coordinating community outreach efforts, special events, volunteer training, grant writing, a speaker’s bureau and a number of community collaborations.  

Cindy’s talk gave us insight into the many programs Pathways offer and what they are doing during the COVID-19 crisis. Cindy described hospice as not something you can decide to go into at any time. Hospice is a care plan for someone who has a terminal illness, who chooses not to have treatment, or there isn’t a treatment, and could claim their lives in six months. Pathway’s hospice is a volunteer center that does not charge the patient. Pathways volunteers are recruited and go through a training process. Additionally, Cindy spoke about Pathway’s many programs they offer such as grief support groups, widows’ groups, and children’s groups for children who have lost someone in their lives. In the 1990’s they started a campus outreach program and in the late 1990’s they started a care giving program for people who aren’t accepted for hospice. Pathways is currently acting as a emergency service, checking in seniors and making sure they have essentials like food, clothing, and toiletries. 

Cindy Skovgard and Pathways Volunteer Hospice are not like every other hospice. Their volunteers with make you feel comfortable and feel like family. If you know anyone who might be struggling or in need of a lifeline, please contact Cindy. There many years in the field has helped them guide clients through all of the red tape to get them the help they need.

Membership Promotion

When you refer a new member, you can have a choice in one of two options

1. Have your dues waived for one quarter.

 

2. Have your dues, as well as the new members dues cut in half for one quarter.

 

New member has to be in good standing for the first 6 months to receive the promotion. 

We have introduced a new type of membership. 

Affiliate Member

       Dues are $150 per quarter

       Pays $50 initiation fee to cover badge and T-shirt expense

       Pays $18 for lunch at each meeting attended

       May give and receive leads and give classification talks

       No attendance requirement; may attend showcase and special events

       Entitled to any open classification; no exclusive classification entitlement

       Listed in roster and on web as affiliate member – classification and name only

       Not a voting member and not board eligible

 

       One-year limit as affiliate member; must become an executive member thereafter
